Writing this article was easy. Easy because I wanted to write about Sienna Miller and Mischa Barton. Not really. Easy because when I went over this article of the Times of India Sunday edition, I found there was no remorse for mankind’s worst tragedy wherein thousands of people died in their sleep because of Methyl-Iso-cyanate poisoning from the Union Carbide’s factory in Bhopal on the 3rd of Dec 1984 and the newspapers in India have not had the time to cover anything else except political news of India’s nuclear deal with the USA and the doldrums that the Government is in as a result. The mistake which I wanted to point out to the Times of India’s editorial team was that as per them, this tragedy took place in 1894, nearly 90 years earlier. There was no erratica published to rectify this mistake too. We still don’t have time for human loss and we can spend millions worth of time and energy over some very inconsequential matters of the general public.
I’m sure when Bhopal: A prayer for Rain is finally made with the former OC star and along with Martin Sheen, it will make news all around for the right reasons.
Warren Anderson, Union Carbide CEO at the time of the disaster lives in New York State and has been hiding in the US since which caused suffering for almost 120,000 survivors. and is wanted for culpable homicide over the deaths of 20,000 people. As the Union Carbide boss, Anderson knew about a 1982 safety audit of the Bhopal plant, which identified 30 major hazards. Rather than fix them in Bhopal, only the company’s identical plant in the US was fixed. Neglecting these hazards in Bhopal caused the deadly explosion. I sure would wish that the characters would get these aspects of the facts out.
As far as looking out for Mischa’s movie, I would sure be glued to the the TV set when the movie comes out.
