Eminent music composer A.R. Rahman and playback singer Sukhwinder Singh have been invited to perform at the 81st Annual Academy Awards (Oscars)! With several nominations for Slumdog Millionaire at the Oscars, including A.R. Rahman’s three, this comes as icing on the cake. Rahman and Sukhwinder Singh will perform the song ‘Jai Ho’ at the “Oscar evening†on February 21st. Rahman will work on the song and modify it to set it in sync with the live orchestra and make it suitable for a stage presentation. His debutante effort in Roja was the first time western percussion was introduced into Indian songs.
Jai Ho along with O Saaya has been nominated in the Best Original Song category this year. Rahman has also been nominated for giving the Best Original Score for Slumdog Millionaire. Interestingly the song ‘Chaiya Chaiya’ – which won international acclaim was used in the Hollywood film Inside Man – was written by Gulzar, composed by A.R. Rahman and performed by Suhkwinder Singh. Now, the same trio has given ‘Jai Ho’, for which A.R. Rahman won the Golden Globe and got nominated for the Oscar! Director Danny Boyle’s low budget film, shot on location in Mumbai with a largely unknown cast, claimed the Daryl F. Zanuck award for producer of the year at Saturday’s event in Beverly Hills. Rags-to-riches drama “Slumdog Millionaire” enhanced its status as frontrunner for next month’s Oscars here Saturday, scooping top prize at the Producers Guild of America Awards.
The film’s success came just two days after it earned 10 nominations for the February 22 Academy Awards. Period romance “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” leads the Oscar nominations with 13 nods. Last year’s PGA award winner, “No Country for Old Men,” eventually went on to win the Oscars’ coveted best picture award. Other films in the running for the PGA Awards top prize included Batman blockbuster “The Dark Knight,” political drama “Frost/Nixon,” and Gus Van Sant’s “Milk.” Meryl Streep scored a 15th Oscar nomination for her role in the film Doubt, alongside Kate Winslet for best actress in Stephen Daldry’s The Reader. Benjamin Button and Slumdog Millionaire were joined by Milk, The Reader and Frost/Nixon as contenders for the coveted best picture prize.
