Participate in this all India competition and compete against students from across 11 cities. The grand prize is a trip to Washington DC, USA along with your parents in May 2009 to witness the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition! To test such basic but vital skills, The Times of India Group brings to you a unique and scholarly, yet fun filled quiz contest – HDFC Standard Life Spell Bee – India Spells 2009. The objective of the exercise is to help and engage Indian students improve their spellings, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, work on their pronunciations, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. This concept would offer novelty and freshness, & engage them through the mechanics of spellings; a first time initiative. The city rounds would entail usage of various methods to test students on spellings offering proper and repeated pronouncing of each word as well as its etymological meanings. There would also be a lot of fun woven around pictures, symbols etc. used as props to help students spell correctly.
The competition will be held in 3 phases.
Phase I – INTRA SCHOOL COMPETITION
This is a simple competition to be held in the classroom itself. Students of 6, 7, 8 and 9 Standard will compete against each other and the winner(s) of this competition will be eligible to participate in Phase II, the inter-city level. We seek the permission of the Principal of schools wishing to participate to conduct this competition.

Phase II – INTER-SCHOOL COMPETITION PER CITY
Beginning on 15 February, the Phase II will feature Schools from 11 cities – Delhi, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai. Each school can send either one member or multiple one-member teams. An RJ from Radio Mirchi will conduct the inter-school competition in each city. There will be various rounds with increasing levels of difficulty at the inter-school level. The winning school/winner/principal and English teacher of each city will be gratified through editorial coverage in the Times of India Broadsheet – City Edition.
Phase III – PRE-FINALE & GRAND FINALE
Based on the scores of each school, the top teams from each city will be invited to Mumbai to compete in the pre-finals followed by the Grand Finale from February 23-26, 2009. Each team member will be invited with one parent to Mumbai for participation. Times Group will bear all costs for travel, lodging and other sundry expenses. The 4 pre-finals and the Grand Finale will be televised as a 5-part series on National Geographic Channel.
The winner of the Grand Finale will be sent by The Times Group to experience Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington on May 26th/27th 2009. While the winner of Spell Bee India 2009 will not participate actively in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, he/she will certainly experience and get a flavour of the magnitude and standard of Scripps National Spelling Bee as a learning process.
