Homer Simpson, from TV show ‘The Simpsons’ beat Harry Potter and Jennifer Aniston’s ‘Rachel’ from sitcom ‘Friends’ to be named as the greatest ever character in TV and films over the last 20 years. The character was rated above Aniston’s iconic portrayal of ‘Rachel’, Harry Potter and Tony Soprano from the hit TV series ‘The Sopranos’ in a survey by Entertainment Weekly magazine. Simpson’s creator Matt Groening said millions of people are able to identify with Homer, best known for his catchphrase ‘D’oh.’ ”People can relate to Homer because we’re all secretly propelled by desires we can’t admit to. Homer is launching himself headfirst into every single impulsive thought that occurs to him. His love of whatever has caught is eye is a joy to witness,” he said. The Harry Potter character, created by author JK Rowling, was described as a “global icon” to take the runner up place in the poll, which said: “Potter is the tragedy scared orphan stands as an inspiring hero of our times”.
The teenage enemy of Vampires ‘Buffy’ was named as the third most important role created over the last two decades. Mafia boss Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini, was fourth while Heather Ledger’s ‘Joker’ from the blockbuster ‘The Dark Knight’ came fifth. The other characters in the top-10 are Rachel from ‘Friends’, Johnny Depp’s Edward Scissorhands from movie of the same name, Anthony Hopkins’ Hannibal Lecter, Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw from ‘Sex And The City’ and cartoon character Spongebob Squarepants.
