I guess the only good that has happened to Sh KPS Gill with him at the helm of affairs of the Indian Hockey Federation is that he has got the official perks for another 15 years of his retired life. I guess he should retire now and change over to Politics because it’s only politicians who can hang onto their posts when everyone around them has resigned. Maybe, it’s that old trick not to accept resignations of the coach etc and dillydally, get the attention of the people into various directions and carry on for another fifteen years.
Let’s also talk of the national pride of yesteryears which many newspapers have reported as a National Shame after we did not qualify for the first time since hockey was introduced as a Olympic discipline. We lost 2-0 to UK in Santiago, Chile in a match the Satta market (I really don’t know if it exists for cricket’s poor cousin) was very confident of an Indian win. I really don’t agree to the fact that any sport can cause you shame. Yes we lost and we need to stop participating till such time we are confident of putting up a reasonable good show. Participation should not be attempted for the sake of competition. It should be healthy and with an aim to win. If you are not confident yourself, there is no point in going ahead and wasting time and money.
I must admit that it’s easy to cast aspersions on KPS but he has a responsibility to the nation. He unlike ShahRukh Khan, Priety Zinta and Vijay Mallya doesn’t own the IHF. He has a terrific reputation as a policeman and let that not get tarnished by the way things are happening for Indian Hockey right now.
