South-west monsoon, the lifeline for a bountiful harvest for the country’s billion-strong population, is likely to be below normal this season, triggering fears of its wide-ranging impact including agriculture and water scarcity.
The delay in onset of monsoon, which has played truant so far after an appearance on May 23, has made the policymakers worried at a time when they were hoping the farm growth rate to play a key role in propping up the economy in the backof recession.
“South-west monsoon from June to September is likely to be below normal,” Earth Sciences Minister Prithviraj Chavan announced today downgrading the weather office forecast to 93 per cent of the average from 96 per cent declared in April.
