Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s monetary worth has got a huge boost. The Indian cricket captain has signed a deal worth Rs 200 crore with a talent management company. Rhiti Sports Management and Mindscapes One will now be in charge of managing all the endorsements of Dhoni. Dhoni has entered into a two-year deal with Rhiti Sports Management and Mindscapes, which will manage the Indian skipper’s long list of endorsements and brand associations, corporate profile, patents and digital rights, images, visibility on social networking sites and merchandise through a joint venture. Tendulkar’s three-year deal with sports management firm Iconix, signed in 2006, was worth Rs 180 crore.
Confirming the development, Rhiti Sports General Manager (Operations) Mr Sanjay Pandey said as per the agreement, the company will be looking after Dhoni’s entire spectrum of endorsements.Dhoni’s deal surpasses that of even Sachin Tendulkar, who in 2006 had a three-year deal worth Rs 180 crore with sports management firm Iconix. Apart from Dhoni, Rhiti Sports also manages cricketers R.P. Singh and Harbhajan Singh.Dhoni is associated with over 22 brands. Among them are PepsiCo, Reebok, Aircel, Godrej and Hershey’s. On an average, he charges up to Rs 6 crore a year for an endorsement.Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has topped the list of world’s 10 top earning cricketers compiled by Forbes, which also features four other players from the sub-continent: Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly.
Raking in $ 10 million, Dhoni is at the top of the chart followed by Tendulkar at the second spot with earnings worth $ 8 million in the list of ‘The World’s Top-Earning Cricketers’.While Singh and Dravid are at the third and fourth spot, respectively, Ganguly and Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting share the sixth place.”Paycheck figures include club and national team salaries and commercial endorsement income over the last 12 months,” Forbes said.Dhoni Singh earned $ 5.5 million while Dravid and Ganguly raked in $ 5 million and $ 3.5 million, respectively. Ponting also earned $ 3.5 million. The India cricket captain,is also the country’s most expensive sportsman.
At the fifth spot is England’s Andrew Flintoff with earnings of $ 4 million followed by Australia’s Brett Lee and English cricketer Kevin Pietersen, both at eighth place, and Australian Michael Clarke is ranked tenth. While Lee and Pietersen raked in $ 3 million each, Clarke earned $ 2.5 million.Take Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who plays for the Chennai Super Kings and tops our list as cricket’s first $ 10 million-a-year man (that’s $ 5,426 for each run scored).”His $ 8 million in endorsements, from the likes of Reebok, General Electric and Pepsi, is 45 per cent more than any other player. “Among all Indian athletes and entertainers, Dhoni’s 17 corporate sponsors is second to only Bollywood star and co-owner of the Knight Riders, Shah Rukh Khan,” Forbes said.
We all know what a cool customer Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is. Very down to earth, someone who knows his job and doesn’t let success got to his head. But then there is also his love for bikes and the good life. Here’s a look at the other side of Captain Marvel. ”The sheer joy of riding a Harley Davidson is unparalleled. I am also fond of computer games and now I can afford to get some expensive games for myself and also ride a bike of my choice,” says the captain. Like Dhoni says, he can now afford a good life–something that is a big benefit of being a rich Indian cricketer.
“Once you start playing in the Indian team, there are some habits you get accustomed to like living in good places, good food and things to make your life easy. I don’t mind that at all,” he adds.
Handling pressure
But to get back to cricket – the pressure of a billion peering eyes can’t be easy to handle. Does it bother him? Does it bring him down? ”Success and failure is not in our hands, but what is certainly in our hands is the amount of effort that we can put in,” says one of India’s most successful captains in recent times. But with so much power also comes responsibility. Responsibility to pump up your players, to tell them what to do. And Dhoni keeps it all simple.
“Before the match is to begin each player pledges to help his team win. They boost each other’s morale in good times and support one another during rough patches,” he adds.
Youth icon
And that’s probably why Mahi is considered such a youth icon. A man who is on his way to becoming India’s greatest captain ever. And he does it with the right attitude.”I feel immensely proud of being called a youth icon. I am aware that I have this tag only because I have been playing good cricket. Had it not been for cricket it would be so different,” says Dhoni.
It all sounds so utopian. Almost perfect. If you believe him, Dhoni has it all worked out like no one has been able to do before him. If it’s true, you just hope the good work continues.
