The oh-so-young looking Padmini Kolhapure seems to have kept herself fit owing to acting and dancing. Wondering where she’s acting when you haven’t seen her on screen? At Rita Academy, Padmini conducts classes on acting and dancing while her sister Tejaswini manages the modelling front. Explaining how she is happy “doing what is my forteâ€, she says, “Some are born actors and some are groomed. Here, we teach the basics to all those who have the fire within.†Is the academy’s focus to train for theatre, television or films? “The booming television industry has a dearth of good actors. But our students can act anywhere; in theatre the result is instant, while on television it’s all about TRP ratings. In Bollywood, however, every Friday is verdict time.â€
She has come here with brother-in-law Shakti Kapoor, who talks about his career that is alive and kicking after 35 years and 700 films. “Everything can be credited to good health, be it Anil Ambani’s, Shakti Kapoor’s or even a doctor’s! For us, it gets tougher as our factory, office and showroom is our body which comes to a standstill when we fail to maintain it,†says this self confessed “good looking villainâ€, who made comedy and dance a part of the bad man’s role. The actor is gung ho about his daughter Shraddha Kapoor’s first film with Pierce Brosnan. “She’s acting with the best in the industry – Amitabh Bachchan, Boman Irani, R Madhavan, Raima Sen, Ajay Devgan, Mahesh Manjrekar, and Siddharth Kher. And no doubt, she’s jubilant,†says Kapoor.
How about Padmini’s acting career? While Prem Rog remains closest to her heart, she has also enjoyed doing Woh Saat Din and Ahista Ahista. “Although I enjoyed my work with actors like Rajesh Khanna, Anil Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, even Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Naseeruddin Shah, the audience liked me best with Mithun. That’s how it is!†she says.
So, do we see a comeback? “Yes, very soon. I am doing three films; Daughter, in which I play a career-oriented woman whose life changes once her adopted daughter enters her life; Phir Bhi Rahengi Nishaniyan with Sachin Khedekar and Bachpan with Helen and Rahul Roy,†says Padmini maintaining each one is different. While Daughter is very emotional, Phir Bhi Rahengi Nishaniyan has a social message and Bachpan has a “range of feelings you will see and identify withâ€. And not just films, Padmini is doing a “full-on comedy play†Aasman Se Gire, Khajoor Pe Atke? with bro-in-law Shakti Kapoor, “the play has songs and dance too!â€Â
Now we know the secret of her fitness.
