“Miss World 2008 is Russia,” announced Julia Morley, head of the Miss World committee that organises the event. Parvathy Omanakuttan was adjudged the first runner-up at the Miss World pageant here Saturday evening, with the crown going to Miss Russia. Parvathy impressed the jury with her looks and quick wit and was one the five finalists out of the 109 contestants at the Sandton Convention Center. However, she was finally beaten by Miss Russia. Miss Trinidad and Tobago, Gabriel Walcott was named the second runner-up. The others in contention in the final five were Miss South Africa and Miss Angola. India had high hopes on 21-year-old Parvathy to win the crown that last came to the country in 2000. India boasts of Miss Worlds like Reita Faria (1966), Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (1994), Diana Hayden (1997), Yukta Mookhey (1999) and Priyanka Chopra (2000).
Sukhinova, who took over the title from Zhang Zi Lin of China to become the 58th Miss World, was crowned after a two-hour long spectacle that combined elements of travelogue and reality show. She beamed as she was crowned.  Sukhinova is from Siberia, studying for an engineering degree. Sukhinova is the second Miss Russia to go on and win the event after Julia Kourochkina won in 1992.   The Miss World pageant has been running for quite some time, with Miss World 2008 serving as the 58th competition, this time hosted at Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa. Originally the pageant was supposed to be taking place in Kiev, Ukraine, but with the still ongoing conflict between Georgia and Russia, the Miss World Organization had decided to move the pageant out of Eastern Europe for the year.
South Africa, who hosted the event for the sixth time, became the country that has held more Miss World pageants than any other. The event was broadcast to millions of viewers in 187 countries.
A couple of years back our Miss India World had won the prize of Navy Queen 2006 organised by the Southern Navel ..oops Naval Command. Nothing surprising!
Anyways congrats to the winners again.
