MUMBAI MERI JAAN — Mumbai Meri Jaan’ talks about the July 11,2006 Mumbai train blasts. The film explores the impact of this devastating incident on the lives of the people of Mumbai. From a brilliant broadcast journalist(Soha Ali Khan) to a patriotic corporate man (R.Madhavan); from a retiring policeman(Paresh Rawal) at the twilight of his life to a rookie cop(Vijay Maurya) at the dawn of his career; from an angry and xenophobic unemployed young man(Kay Kay Menon) to a coffee-vendor(Irrfan) struggling to survive and belong: ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’ follows the lives of people from all strata of Mumbai’s bustling society as they tackle the aftermath of a fatal incident that brings out the best and sometimes the worst in them. The cinematography by Sanjay Jadhav is splendid and the camera brings you up close and personal with the happening of events. Though the narrative moves back and forth from one character to another, it’s the well laid out shots that really draw your attention. Though the film may seem a little slow paced with the rapid edit switches between narratives nevertheless it’s impressive. The dialogues are really hard hitting.
This Movie brings out the best from each actor and no actor over rides the other. And at no point does the focus shift from the script to the actors. The characters of the film have been so well defined and sketched out. Every actor carries his part real well . Paresh Rawal leaves behind a lot of valuable lines and is quite an entertainer. Over all we can say the movie is worth watching and is some what has a matured script.
Phoonk– The movie is in true sense a thriller so it will be justice to first star with the story line. The film is about ‘Black Magic’ that goes on the lines of Ram Gopal Varma’s earlier film ‘Ram Gopal . Rajeev (Sudeep) is an Engineering Contractor who lives with his wife Aarthi and two kids. He happens to develop strife with two of his business partners and kicks them out of his house publicly when a party was going on. This pumps in a fire of vengeance in the woman Madhu (Ashwini) who gets kicked out by him. She takes revenge on Rajeev by spelling black magic on his school going daughter Raksha (Ehsaas). Rajeev is an atheist and his wife is theist. Struggle and friction of opinions arise in his house as Raksha becomes the victim of black magic. Both medical science and occult science compete with each other to protect Raksha. Finally, who wins-the medical science or the occult science? That becomes the climax.
The best performer in the film is child artiste Ehsaas
who excelled on par with Urmila Matondkar in Bhooth. Even the lady villain Ashwini proved to be best in delivering horrifying performance. Others are just ok in their shoes.
First half of the film goes with some fear factors till the interval and the second half starts pumping in shocks here and there. But nothing extra ordinary to make you scared. The film was hyped in a big way and RGV has also announced an award for the audience those watch the film in full alone. But with this type of product even an todler can go and watch without feeling scared.
In spite of being an horror film it lacks fear factor.
