A few weeks ago, we got to know Sir Richard Branson. This week, we’re going to get to know the stunning and very popular; Angelina Jolie. Unlike the Virgin Brand tycoon, I know a bit about who Angelina is. And yet, what I’ve learned about her when researching for this article, I must admit that I was quite surprised. I always knew she was more than just an actress and was deep into many other things, but I was never aware of the great things she has done. Shall we take a look and see? She was born as Angelina Julie Voight on June 4, 1975. She takes after her father, Jon Voight, in a career in acting. Though she chose not to use “Voight†as her stage name because she wanted to establish an identity away from her father. Aside from being called one of the most beautiful women in the world, a confirmed biseual, a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency, Angelina is also one heck of a humanitarian. Jolie has received several awards for her spectacular performances in a number of films. To name a few popular ones; Lara Croft: Tomb Raider 1 and 2, and Mr&Mrs Smith.
In her 30 odd years, Angelina has wed and divorced twice. On March 28, 1996 she married Jonny Lee Miller, a british actor (and coincidentally, a co-star of hers rom the 1995 movie, “Hackersâ€). She showed up at her wedding in – even by my standards – odd clothing: black leather pants and a white shirt with Jonny Lee Miller’s name written in her blood. They divorced on February 3, 1999 on good terms and Jolie is quoted, “It comes down to timing. I think he’s the greatest husband a girl could ask for. I’ll always love him, we were simply too young.â€
Next came Billy Bob Thorton, a screenwriter, actor, director, playwright and singer. On May 5, 2000 they were married and were the center of a media frenzy with their passion for each other. Their relationship is most famous for their so-called “gesture of love†when they wore vials containing one another’s blood around their necks. They divorced May 27, 2003 with Angelina mentioned that the two had just changed and realized one day they had nothing in common.
In the early months of 2005, Jolie was accused of being the “other woman†which caused the divorce between Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. Angelina denies this profusely, claiming she could never forgive herself for being with a married man, nor fall in love with a man who would cheat on his wife, especially when her father cheated on her mother. Throughout the rest of 2005, Brad and Angelina were seen together often, and on January 11, 2006 Angelina announced to the world she was pregnant with Brad Pitt’s child. Thus started the “Brangelina†craze. The child she had with Brad Pitt isn’t the only one she’s got. Angelina has her own little “Brady Bunch†family. On March 10, 2002 she adopted her first son when he was 7 months old from an orphange in Battambang, Cambodia. Born as Rath Vibol on August 5, 2001 he was adopted by Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thorton and named Maddox Chivan Thorton Jolie. After her divorce from Thorton, she removed the “Thorton†from his name when she achieved full custody of the boy.
July 6, 2005 say her adopting a 6 month old girl from an orphanage in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She was born as Tena Adam (or Yemsrach) on January 8, 2005. Upon adoption, she was renamed Zahara Marley Jolie. Shortly after the adoption, the family had a scare when they returned to the United States and Zahara had to be admitted into a hospital for dehydration and malnutrition. Unsurprisingly, Jolie announced that the decision to adopt Zahara was made with Brad Pitt. And on January 19, 2006 Brad’s late 2005 request to legally adopt Angelina’s children was granted. And Jolie’s two children’s names were changed to Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt and Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt.
May 27, 2006 say the birth of Brangelina’s first biological daughter; Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt. She was born in Swakopmund, Namibia by means of a caesarean section. Photos of little Shiloh became a media rarity and their was a high demand for them. Angelina sold pictures of her daughter to the highest bidders and got several million dollars for them. All of the money was donated to an undisclosed charity. Shiloh definitely wasn’t the last addition to the Jolie-Pitt family. On May 27, 2006 the couple adopted a 3 year old boy from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He was born on November 29, 2003 as Pham Quang Sang and after adoption was renamed Pax Thien Jolie (then later Pax Thien Jolie-Pitt).
And early 2008 heard the announcement that Angelina Jolie is once again prenant, and this time her and Brad are expecting a set of twins! As the older sister of a set of identical twins, I wish her current children the best of luck. Now that we’ve touched on some of life and her family, how about we take a look at her humanitarian work? It was after the filming of Tomb Raider in Cambodia that Angelina first because aware of humanitarian crises. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) gave her more information on trouble around the world. In February 2001 she went on her first field visit for UNHCR. It was an 18-day mission to Sierra Leone and Tanzania. What she saw, shocked her. The following months saw her returning to Cambodia and travelling to Pakistan to meet with Afghan refugees.
On the mission, Jolie insisted on covering all the costs related to her missions, shared the same working and living conditions as the other UNHCR filed staff during her visits, and donated $1 million dollars for Afghan refugees. UNHCR was impressed by her interest and devotion and on August 27, 2001 gave her the title of “Goodwill Ambassador†and their headquarters in Geneva. I could go on forever about everything Angelina’s done. It is indeed amazing how much she has given to these people in need. And I truly hope she accomplishes her goal of; “Awareness of the plight of these people. I think they should be commended for what they have survived, not looke down upon.â€
As with Sir Richard Branson, I hope this has brought to light just a little bit about what a great person Angelina Jolie really is.
