Amy (Shailene Woodley, “The O.C.”) gets pregnant in “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” (Tuesday, 8 p.m., ABC Family). Amy is the sincere nice girl in school who is a good student and in band camp, has sex once with Ricky , who’s the drummer of the band. The poor protagonist isn’t even sure about the fact that she actually did it and goes on to tell her two best friends. As they talk, the truth dawns on them like it would on any person naturally with the thoughts, “I think I’m in enough trouble now, without skipping class,”. A good boy Ben is interested in Amy and the other students seem like fully drawn characters. Her friends convince Amy to see her doctor and here on her story unfolds gradually into one of the most common teen problems being faced in America today. People getting into the groove too early in life and later on dealing with the trauma of an unexpected pregnancy with its affects on them, their families and their friends in a drama brought on TV by Brenda Hampton, creator of ’7th Heaven.’
Her mom, Molly Ringwald (“The Breakfast Club”), worries equally about Amy’s younger sister, who has a reasonable distrust in everything good. The family is going to deal with the problem of teenage unwanted pregnancy in the most dramatised manner seen in recent times. However, Hollywood should know that abortion remains legal and it doesn’t find too much mention in the plot. A major social problem and I’m sure Brenda Hampton, creator of this series and “7th Heaven,” is likely to show how Amy’s pregnancy affects everyone around her and come our successfully with some good social message. I think its going to find a lot of viewers like it did on the first day of it’s telecast and created a record!!!!
Note from the editor, Ragini
Personally, I’d rather pull all of us together to watch this, rather than come to think of it in unwanted ways and thoughts that might emerge in the minds of readers. It can also be a good topic of discussion and I’d definitely like people to put up their comments and suggestions to this problem which we would forward to the channel broadcasting the program.
