Top Chef is an American reality competition show that airs on the cable television network AXN in India and was originally on network Bravo in the USA, in which chefs compete against each other in weekly challenges. They are judged by a panel of professional chefs and other notables from the food and wine industry with one or more contestants eliminated each week. The show is produced by Magical Elves Productions, the same company that created Project Runway.
The newest crop of 16 rising chefs from take on the challenges through various cities around USA. The desi version cookbook author, actress, ex wife of (the writer of the banned book Satanic Verses) Salman Rushdie and guest-host Padma Lakshmi presides over the judge’s table alongside head judge Tom Colicchio, renowned culinary figure and chef/owner, Craft Restaurants, judge Gail Simmons, of Food & Wine Magazine and judge Ted Allen, Emmy-winning cookbook author and TV personality.
Anthony Bourdain leads the guest judges with 5 appearances, Rocco DiSpirito* and Eric Ripert with 3 (Ripert appeared a fourth time on the Top Chef Holiday Special) and the rest tie with two: Wylie Dufresne*, Hubert Keller*, Daniel Boulud*, Michelle Bernstein, Ming Tsai and Mike Yakura appeared singly.
The 16 Top Chef cheftestants will be eliminated slowly and weekly as they compete to out-flavor, out-cook and out-do their competition. The winning chef receives $100,000 in seed money to help open a restaurant, furnished by the makers of the Glad family of products, a feature in Food & Wine magazine, a showcase at the Annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, a gourmet dream vacation in the French Alps, and will earn the title of “Top Chef.”
