U Me Aur Hum is divided into 2 parts. The first half is basically a simple love story on how Ajay (Ajay Devgan) woos Piya (Kajol). The second half tells us that marriage is not just sharing happy moments together but being there for each other at the time of distress. It’s also about fullfilling eachother’s dreams and promises made to each other.
The film poses a theory through a well- conceived story of a family that suffers from a continuous pain of separation between a wife- cum-patient of a serious disease, Alzheimer and the rest including her husband who leaves no stone unturned to keep the promise intact that he made with his wife before marriage and in course of love. Neither does Piya (Kajol) know that she is the victim of Alzheimer, nor does her husband Ajay Mehra (Ajay Devgan) about it before marrying her. Ajay while on a world cruise falls in love with Piya who happens to serve drinks on the cruise and marries her later.
However, the film lacks deft editing and also suffers in terms of coherence. As a result, the viewers get confused, but overall the impact of Alzheimer keeps them intact to see the end. Ajay on the eve of 25th anniversary narrates his story to Piya in a restaurant. She gets her memory back and realizes that it was only a wife in her that motivated him to try for two hours to get her cured. She recollects everything before Ajay ends his story. This brings tears in their eyes. They have had a happy end because of their intense love for each other. Kajol indeed steals the show with her mature performances. The film has a lot for youth in terms of romance and excitement and a message as well that nothing can beat the power of pure love.
One of the prime reasons why U Me Aur Hum works, and works big time, is because it’s aimed at the heart. Anyone who’s into relationships, anyone who believes in love, anyone who thinks from the heart, anyone who has watched his/her partner grapple a grave disease, will identify with a film like U Me Aur Hum.
Its Kajol who stands out yet again with a brilliant performance. Always lively on screen, fantastic expressions, great smile. Kajol is the soul of U Me Aur Hum. Ajay Devgan known for his hard hitting roles, is good in a romantic role, although a bit off in highly emotional scenes. Karan Khanna in a comic role, is irritating. Isha Sharwani looks gorgeous, performs well. Sumeet Raghavan is a great actor also the only supporting character worth-a-mention. Divya Dutta is average, looks plumpy. Sachin Khedekar is good.
